The Birth Flower for March

3rd Mar 2015

Whether it is a huge bouquet or a lone rose, flowers express love, remembrance, apology, support or may just be a thoughtful gesture. Whatever the case flowers have played an important role as gestures and gifts. The meanings and traditions of flower giving may change but remain a significant part of humans connecting.

The birth flower for the month of March is the daffodil. The daffodil is also known as Jonquil or Narcissis. The daffodil is most often recognized as a yellow flower but this flower comes in many color varieties such as white, pink and orange.

Daffodils have a flaring arrangement of three petals and three petal-like sepals called a corona. The corona radiates out and frames the central fused petals that form either a trumpet or a shorter cup, which may be so short it looks like a flattened plate. Daffodil flowers can be all one color or have different colors of coronas and trumpets, and sometimes trumpets are rimmed with a third color. The daffodil is a widely cultivated ornamental plant that is native to southern Europe.

The daffodil is virtually synonymous with spring symbolizing rebirth and new beginnings. In England, they are called the “Lent Lily” because of their long association with Lent.

In Wales it’s said that if you spot the first daffodil of the season your next twelve months will be filled with wealth and good fortune.

Chinese legend has said that if a daffodil bulb is forced to bloom during the New Year it will bring good luck to your home.

Finally it has been said to give daffodils in bunches as a single daffodil bloom can foretell misfortune.
